WirePOLITICS: Petri drops out of U.S. House race

Tom Waring, the Wire

Republicans have not made an endorsement in the congressional race, but it won’t be state Rep. Scott Petri.

Last week, Petri abruptly dropped out of the race, claiming in a Facebook post that the primary would have divided the party.

Petri announced in the same post that he would run again for re-election. That chased Mark Byelich out of the race for Petri’s state House seat.

In his run for Congress, Petri racked up endorsements from former Gov. Mark Schweiker, state Sens. Chuck McIlhinney and Tommy Tomlinson, state Rep. Frank Farry, Bucks County Commissioner Charles Martin and Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler.

However, Brian Fitzpatrick, a retired FBI agent and younger brother of Mike Fitzpatrick, made a late entry into the race, threatening Petri’s hold as the GOP frontrunner.

The district consists of all of Bucks County and portions of Montgomery County.
